TCM Closes Out 2023 With “Learning to Fly”
Turner Classic Movies puts a nice arrangement of the Petty classic behind its annual tribute to entertainers we lost this year
It’s been quite a year for Tom Petty’s music and its enduring relevance:
The standout performance of Chris Stapleton at the Super Bowl led us to the connection he has with Petty’s music
We also learned George Strait pays tribute to Petty at his shows
We discovered “Weird Al” Yankovich playing covers of Petty songs at select shows
The movie The Covenant used “Won’t Back Down” in its trailers
The new movie Iron Claw also uses Petty music and imagery in the background.
And we heard the Goo Goo Dolls covering “Won’t Back Down” on network television
Now, we have Turner Classic Movies using a nice arrangement of “Learning to Fly” behind its annual tribute montage to movie and entertainment contributors who passed away this year.
It’s a lovely tribute to those in front of and behind the camera, and the faces — both famous and obscure — tell a story of dedication to storytelling and movie magic we totally respect and admire.
We will see you next year!
