Goo Goo Dolls and O.A.R. — “Won’t Back Down”
Two artists team up for a cover of a Tom Petty classic — and it’s pretty impressive
On August 15th, the Goo Goo Dolls will be performing at the Leader Bank Pavilion near Fan Pier with the tour’s special guest O.A.R. and their lead vocalist Marc Roberge. If you’re attending or passing by, you may hear a familiar song during the show.
O.A.R. stands for “Of A Revolution,” and the group has had mainstream success since 2005, with multiple charting singles. The Goo Goo Dolls have been around longer, and have had more hits, some of them massive — “Iris” is a modern classic — in addition to being nominated for multiple Grammy Awards.
Both bands love Tom Petty’s music, and they fell into a natural collaboration on the cover, with Roberge saying:
Tom Petty’s music has been such an inspiration for us and a meaningful part of our musical journey. We’re looking forward to playing it out on the road for what will be a very special summer of music.
The groups recently also performed the song on Good Morning America, reaching a massive morning audience.
The Goo Goo Dolls will tour with O.A.R. into September, when Fitz and the Tantrums take over as the opener, making it likely the cover of “I Won’t Back Down” will be retired at that point for the show.
Still, it’s nice to see once again Petty’s music honored in the best way possible — by being played.
WooHoo!!
