Favorite Photos — Seger and Petty
Two artists took their roots rock down different paths to fame and fortune
Bob Seger used to sell out the Silverdome in Detroit (59,000 people), only to travel to Chicago a few days later to do a show to 50. Tom Petty had the college town of Gainesville to entertain, and his famous farm concerts/festivals did just that. Regional acts like these — Bruce Springsteen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Van Halen are other notable examples — had time to hone their craft before they burst onto the national and international scene. It made them amazing to catch live early on, because while new to most audiences, they were seasoned professionals by that point.
The photo above was taken in 1979 by Tom Weschler in Detroit. Weschler was also Seger’s road manager.
Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers were well-acquainted by this time, having played events together on multiple occasions.
It’s a great picture of two artists who knew how to rock!
Have a good weekend!
